Because I knew that I would have some free-time after finishing off university and because I’ve always been very interested in missions, especially in teaching missionary kids abroad, I wanted to experience what it is like to live and teach in a ‘Developing Country’. But because my application was quite late, I actually didn’t really think it would work out. So when New Tribes Mission offered for me to go to Mozambique for three months, I just knew that this was the place where God wanted me to be, even though, to be honest, Africa has never been very high on my list.
Rapale International School was founded four years ago. The school is located about 25 km outside the city of Nampula close to Rapale in the northern part of Mozambique. Its location is on 80 hectares of picturesque open land in the midst of farming operations. It’s a christian English-speaking school and is attended by about 80 pupils (grade 1-9) from all over the world.
No fence, miles of African bush, poisonous snakes, scorpions, dusty “roads”, etc. – no one in Germany would call that a “farm”. But inheriting my dad’s passion for outdoor activities and exploring nature, I fell in love with it straight away and I was able to adapt quickly.
I taught music in all the classes (grade 1 to 8) and PE (physical education) in grade 1 to 5. Over the weeks I taught more and more lessons like math in grade 1, 2 and 3 as well as English in grade 2. Whenever I didn’t have my own lessons I helped other teachers who asked for assistance.
For me it was a very blessed time and a great learning opportunity. I absolutely loved teaching these precious little children! I’m very thankful that I was able to improve my English, get some practical experience and learn from other teachers. But what I enjoyed the most was getting to know the local culture and this beautiful country on the one hand, and the different projects and missionaries on the farm on the other hand. I was impressed by the hospitality and kindness shown to me and the willingness of these people to give up everything to serve God in Mozambique.
I’d definitely recommend a mission trip with NTM and if you’re a teacher I really want to challenge you to go and help. There’s a huge need for teachers out there and schools like Rapale International School are always happy and willing to take volunteers – even if it’s just for a few months.
