Slowly understanding

A lot happened last month for Adrian and Evelyn Jotter and family, who serve among the Umayam people of the Philippines, including enjoying a wonderful family holiday.

They had to say goodbye to their homeschool helper who had spent nine months with them. Their co-workers house construction continued. Adrian took part in a workshop in Manila and God provided the strength for Evelyn whilst he was away, to name just a few happenings.

Transitioning from one language learning phase to the next has meant that their language helpers are in their element demonstrating and explaining to them what they do daily. Adrian and Evelyn have also written shopping lists and organised helicopter flights for getting visitors and supplies into the village while the road is only passable by motorbike due to heavy rain, and they have welcomed Adrian’s parents who are visiting for about three weeks.

It is encouraging for them to realise that they are slowly understanding more and more about who in the village is related to whom and in what relation. They have also begun to use the local telephone network – since there is no electricity or mobile phone signal people call each other via walkie talkies.

PRAISE

They had a good holiday during which they said goodbye to Madleen their home school helper.

Since returning to the village, they have had the opportunity to learn a lot more about culture.

Adrian had a safe trip to Manila where he attended a workshop for missionaries. Evelyn and the children managed well without him in the village despite it being challenging.

Evelyn was able to complete phase 2 of language study and begin phase 3.

Adrian’s parents arrived safely in the village.

The renewal of the septic tank system was successfully completed.

Their co-workers house build is going well.

Opportunities to strengthen relationships with local people. Many guests from other villages attended a celebration locally helping them to become better known within the whole people group.

PRAYER

Wisdom and unity in marriage, parenting, as a team, and in handling stress.

That the curiosity toward them as foreigners will at the right moment turn into curiosity about what they have to say about God.

They currently have to spend a lot of time on logistical planning because the road to their village was partially destroyed by rain

The roof extension project is still pending; materials can’t be delivered.

For school supplies to arrive soon and for a good start into the new school year

For a good time with Adrian’s parents who are visiting them.

For their new homeschool helper, Hanna, who is expected to arrive later this month, to adjust well to living life with them as a family in the Philippines.

For continued motivation in language and culture learning and especially for availability of male language helpers for Adrian.
