Six months on

Gabi has now been in West Africa for over six months. Thank you so much for your prayerful interest during this time! It makes such a difference for her to know that you are travelling this path with her, even if it is from a distance.

In July, Gabi and her colleague spent a few days outside the capital. It was a nice break from their everyday life in the city. They enjoyed the free days and the fresh air. Afterwards they returned with new energy to continue language and culture study.

At the beginning of August, she had the opportunity to be part of a ‘ladies retreat’ together with some women from her church. It was a new adventure for her – three days with African ladies who she could only talk to in French. They studied some Bible passages and talked about different topics, sang and prayed together, cooked and ate together, chatted, and went swimming in the sea. There were some challenging moments for Gabi, but she also experienced the Lord’s help in it all. It was a great opportunity to get to know more of the culture and deepen relationships, and she found it interesting to take part in the activities. She was especially touched by the testimonies that several women shared about difficult personal situations, and how the ladies then prayed for each other.

Daily French sessions continue. In a typical session, Gabi will do all kinds of activities with her language helper; including listening to Bible chapters, African stories and audio books, and watching short videos. During the activities, her language helper writes down and makes a recording of the new vocabulary so that Gabi can practice it later on. After each activity, she usually gives a summary of the story and then her language helper corrects her. They also talk about different topics, and Gabi asks questions about the culture. Sometimes they go on outings together; for example, going to the market, buying something in the little shop around the corner, or having ice cream together. This is great for observing and learning from her language helper how to do these everyday things. It also makes language study more fun.

Give thanks for:

  • His goodness to Gabi during her first six months in West Africa.
  • The break outside the city.
  • The ladies retreat.

Please pray for:

  • Continued growth in her relationship with the Lord.
  • Progress in language and culture study.
  • Good relationships with her two language helpers!
