Our mission has put out the following statement, “We are saddened to hear of the loss of life, as last week Friday May 24th a landslide struck Yambali village in Enga province. Initial estimates of death are in the hundreds. We are thankful to hear of assistance being provided by disaster officials, PNG Defence Force, and the Department of Works and Highways to start relief work and recovery of bodies. Supporting these government agencies are non-government organisations, as well as the Australian government.
Currently, as an organisation, New Tribes Mission does not have any personnel or works in this proximity, so we are not directly affected at this time. We will continue to monitor and assess the situation and are grateful for the PNG government and relief organisations that have stepped in to assist so far. Pray that the assistance provided will meet the targeted specific needs and ongoing prayers for the families affected by this tragedy are appreciated.”
