Recently, Regina met a woman who has a niece named Regina. Due to the link with names, she invited Regina to visit her sister and family who are from the Serer-Saafi people group. The Serer are the third largest in Senegal.

The family was very hospitable and she received an invitation to a traditional Henna treatment and to a three-day wedding ceremony in their village.

Usually one receives a Senegalese name while living in Senegal. Regina’s Wolof Name is ‘Lingeer‘, meaning Princess. Her other Name is ‘Aram ‘, that is the name of the grandmother of the groom, from the wedding she attended.

During the wedding Regina saw many traditions and rituals, although she is not sure of their meanings. Some things reminded her of the Bible. No one knew for sure when the groom was coming to get his bride. On the last day, the bride had to get water from the well. This reminded her of the verse in John 7:37, “On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, if anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink”. No one is there to quench the thirst of these people. No one has a Bible in the language and even if they did, many do not know how to read. Pray for workers, the field is ready for harvest.

Pray for Regina to progress in language and culture study. It is culturally and relationship wise better to learn French but at the same time it is an enormous challenge because French is not always spoken.

Also pray for Regina’s relationships to her neighbours, new friends and host families; and that she can spend time with them.

Pray that Regina will use her time wisely, make good decisions, and stay well balanced.
